Pakistan, Kazakhstan Aim to Boost Trade to $1 Billion

Published by

Pakistan and Kazakhstan have agreed to raise bilateral trade to $1 billion, setting an ambitious target during President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s state visit to Islamabad, aimed at strengthening economic cooperation and long-term partnership between the two countries.

President Tokayev arrived in Pakistan on a two-day official visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and was welcomed at the Prime Minister’s House with a guard of honour and national anthems. He was accompanied by a high-level delegation, underscoring the importance both sides attach to the relationship.

Trade Gap and Growth Potential

Speaking at a joint press conference after the signing of over 30 memoranda of understanding, the prime minister said the current trade volume of around $250 million does not reflect the true economic potential of the two countries.

“There is immense scope to expand trade and investment, and both governments must work closely with the private sector to achieve the $1 billion target,” the prime minister said.

The MoUs cover multiple sectors, including petroleum, mining, maritime affairs, logistics, and connectivity, aimed at facilitating smoother trade flows.

Broader Cooperation and Regional Connectivity

The two leaders held both one-on-one and delegation-level talks, focusing on economic collaboration, investment opportunities, and regional integration. Both sides emphasized the need for stronger institutional coordination and active private sector participation to meet the new trade goal.

President Tokayev also took part in ceremonial activities, including planting a commemorative sapling at the Prime Minister’s House, symbolizing growing bilateral ties.
