Pakistan is moving closer to finalizing a $600 million World Bank-supported initiative aimed at modernizing the country’s public finance system and enhancing the efficiency of public resource use.
The Pakistan Public Resources for Inclusive Development (PPRID) program seeks to improve revenue collection, expenditure transparency, and national data systems to support evidence-based policymaking. It will be jointly implemented by the Finance Division, Federal Board of Revenue, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, and key ministries including Planning, Commerce, and Energy.
The $600 million package includes a $560 million performance-based loan and $40 million for technical assistance to strengthen system capacity. Officials note that the initiative targets structural issues such as fragmented fiscal planning, rigid budgeting, and limited accountability.
A senior official stated,
“PPRID is designed to enhance transparency and efficiency, ensuring that public resources are used effectively to support inclusive development.”
Technical reviewers have suggested refining performance indicators and providing a detailed implementation framework for the technical assistance component before final approval.
