Pakistan is taking a major step to boost its Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) by developing an Amazon-style digital platform aimed at connecting local businesses with global buyers. The government hopes this move will give Pakistani SMEs easier access to international markets and promote their products worldwide.
The announcement came after a high-level meeting chaired by Haroon Akhtar Khan, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production. The session also included Secretary of Industries and Production Saif Anjum, SMEDA CEO Nadia J. Seth, and members of the SMEDA Board.
During the meeting, Haroon Akhtar Khan highlighted the potential of digitalization to strengthen SMEs’ market presence. He noted that a dedicated online platform would allow businesses to showcase their products globally, opening doors to new export opportunities.
Under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision, the government plans to launch a comprehensive portal targeting SMEs, as well as the gems and jewelry and automobile sectors. The platform is being designed to meet international standards, inspired by global leaders such as Alibaba, AliExpress, and Amazon.
The portal will focus on high-quality, value-added products made in Pakistan, offering a centralized space for international buyers to explore local offerings. To ensure its timely rollout, Khan has formed a working group tasked with creating a detailed roadmap and implementing the platform effectively.
Officials said the initiative aims to strengthen Pakistan’s presence in the global e-commerce ecosystem and help local SMEs compete on an international scale.
