Pakistan Pushes Forward with 5G Auction Despite Court Challenges

The government has decided to move ahead with the auction of 5G spectrum, even though the “clean spectrum” condition is not fully met. Out of 194 MHz of prime spectrum in the 2600 MHz band, 140 MHz is still under court review. Authorities, however, noted that no stay order currently restricts its use.

The term “clean spectrum” refers to frequencies that are fully cleared of legal disputes before being offered to telecom operators. In Pakistan, portions of the 2600 MHz band have long been tied up in court cases. These delays prevented a fully cleared spectrum from being available for auction. Resolving these issues has been a key policy priority to enable faster 5G rollout.

According to sources, the auction will cover the full 194 MHz of prime spectrum. The 140 MHz under legal scrutiny has no active equipment, meaning it can be offered once the policy directive is implemented. Afterward, the government will ensure the spectrum is available for telecom operators.

Industry insiders suggest that telecom companies are expected to show strong participation in the auction. This move aims to accelerate 5G rollout in Pakistan, leveraging available spectrum without waiting for court resolutions.
