Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi announced an ambitious development plan for Pakistan Railways, marking the first comprehensive modernization in its 78-year history. The initiative includes digitization, new railway tracks, upgraded passenger facilities, and enhanced connectivity with regional neighbors.

Under this initiative, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 2 billion loan for a 480-kilometer Karachi–Rohri railway track, which will cut travel time by at least five hours. The groundbreaking is expected in July 2026, with completion in 2.5 to 3 years.

The Reko Diq project includes a 900-kilometer track from Rohri to Nokundi, with 500 kilometers of new track and 400 kilometers of upgraded track. The 87-kilometer Nokundi–Taftan track will improve connectivity with Iran. Additionally, a 54-kilometer People’s Train route in Balochistan and eight new regional routes in Punjab are being launched.

Pakistan Railways is upgrading all major trains with Wi-Fi, security cameras, modern dining cars, and hostesses by December 31, 2026. Ticket booking is now available through the Rabta App, and a 1,700-kilometer fiber optic network is being installed. Stations in Karachi and Lahore are being made safe and secure, while 155 railway stations have shifted to solar energy.

Provinces are now allowed to operate branch lines, with Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan already participating. Plans are in progress for rail connectivity with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Iran, including the Islamabad–Tehran–Istanbul railway service, pending security clearance.

Pakistan Railways achieved its highest-ever daily revenue of Rs. 300 million and aims to reach Rs. 1 trillion by June 2026. Employee rights are being safeguarded, railway hospitals and schools are being upgraded and outsourced, and free medical treatment will be provided. Fourteen running rooms are also being improved for staff welfare.

For decades, Pakistan Railways has faced challenges in efficiency, infrastructure, and passenger services. This modernization plan, led by the Prime Minister’s directives, aims to transform the organization into a modern, safe, and profitable system, with digitalization and international connectivity at its core.
