The federal government has achieved significant cost savings by adopting locally manufactured materials for the national power grid. Federal Minister for Power Division Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari praised the National Grid Company’s indigenization policy, noting that it has strengthened Pakistan’s industrial base while reducing dependency on imports.
Under the policy, contracts worth Rs. 12.673 billion have been awarded to local industries. The use of domestically produced transmission line conductors has reportedly saved the government around 40 percent compared to imported alternatives. So far, nine educational orders worth Rs. 900 million have been issued, and 11 local firms have been registered for capability development.
The indigenization initiative promotes local manufacturing through educational orders, joint ventures with international firms, and establishment of local subsidiaries. According to the minister, using locally produced materials not only conserves foreign exchange but also accelerates project timelines, allowing transmission infrastructure projects to be completed faster.
The policy is expected to support export growth in sectors such as steel, cables, and conductors, aligning with the government’s vision of reducing import dependence and building long-term economic resilience. This approach highlights Pakistan’s focus on strengthening domestic capabilities while achieving financial and operational efficiencies in the energy sector.
