Pakistan Tests First AI-Powered Driverless Car at NED University

Pakistan has achieved a technological milestone as engineers at NED University of Engineering and Technology successfully tested the country’s first AI powered driverless car. The autonomous vehicle completed trial runs smoothly on campus roads, showcasing advanced AI, robotics, and sensor integration.
Engineers at NED University have converted a China imported electric car into Pakistan’s first fully self driving vehicle. Developed by the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence over the past year, the car integrates AI, robotics, mapping tools, and high-resolution sensors to navigate autonomously.
Dr Muhammad Khurram, project head and director at the National Centre for AI, said the vehicle has reached a mature testing stage, with steering controlled by radar and computer vision. The team is now focusing on object detection, lane recognition, traffic signals, and speed-limit adherence.
Currently, the car operates at 15–20 km/h, capable of turning independently while recognizing oncoming traffic. Team member Inzamam Khan highlighted that its advanced sensors allow it to handle Pakistan’s challenging road conditions, including potholes and uneven surfaces.
The project began under former vice chancellor Dr Saroosh Hashmat Lodhi and has progressed under Dr Tufail Ahmed, marking a significant step in Pakistan’s engineering and AI innovation. The successful trial has drawn attention from students, visitors, and tech enthusiasts, signaling the country’s growing potential in autonomous vehicle technology.
