PIA Plans to Lease GE90 Engines for Boeing 777 Aircraft
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has invited bids to lease GE90 engines for its Boeing 777 fleet, as the national carrier moves to ensure sufficient technical capacity ahead of the launch of new long-haul services.
The tender reflects the airline’s focus on strengthening engine availability as it prepares to operate high-demand international routes, particularly to the United Kingdom.
PIA is in the final stages of planning for the resumption of London flights using the Boeing 777, confirming the aircraft type for what remains one of its most commercially important international markets. According to the proposed schedule, the Islamabad- London service is expected to commence on March 29, with three weekly flights planned on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The Lahore- London route is projected to begin on March 30, with one weekly flight scheduled on Mondays.
The Boeing 777 is the main aircraft used by PIA on long-haul routes and carries more passengers than its other widebody jets. Leasing extra engines is intended to improve reliability and help avoid flight disruptions caused by technical issues.
Alongside its international expansion plans, the airline has also begun early preparations for the Ramadan 2026 travel season. PIA has issued separate tenders for onboard iftar items, including date packets and juice boxes, for both domestic and international flights, with suppliers invited to submit bids later this month.
The combined measures indicate that the airline is working to stabilize operations, improve service continuity, and prepare for seasonal and long-haul demand as it gradually rebuilds its international network.
