Sony is allegedly building a portable powerhouse. A massive PlayStation 6 handheld leak reveals the company plans to re-enter the dedicated portable market. Currently, the PlayStation 5 approaches its sixth year on the market. In fact, as of March 2026, the PS5 continues to aggressively outsell the newly released Nintendo Switch 2. Nevertheless, the industry is already looking ahead to the next console generation.
Next-Gen Specs: Beating the Xbox Series S
Prominent industry insider KeplerL2 recently dropped major hardware details on the NeoGAF gaming forum. According to the insider, the PS6 handheld will natively play the mainline home console library. Consequently, this device stands as a traditional portable console, completely distinct from the cloud-streaming PlayStation Portal.
Furthermore, the leaked specs highlight incredible performance capabilities. The portable PS6 features a GPU that outpaces Microsoft’s Xbox Series S. Specifically, it will massively outperform the Series S in ray tracing and path tracing. Moreover, the device utilizes an upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). This upscaling technology reportedly surpasses Nvidia’s current market-leading DLSS 4.5. Meanwhile, the competing Nintendo Switch 2 currently relies on the older DLSS 2.
PlayStation 6 Handheld: Sony’s True Handheld Revival
Sony has a diverse history with portable hardware. The company launched the highly successful PlayStation Portable (PSP) outside Japan in March 2005. That UMD-based device supported games, movies, and music, ultimately selling around 80 million units before its 2014 discontinuation.
Later, Sony released the PlayStation Vita outside Japan in February 2012. The Vita boasted a 5-inch display, dual analog sticks, and digital download support. However, despite earning a dedicated cult following, it suffered from poor sales. Ultimately, Sony completely discontinued the Vita in 2019. Therefore, this rumored PS6 device marks Sony’s first true handheld hardware since the Vita.
A Premium Price for Next-Gen Portability
Modern technology delivers immense power, but it also drives up manufacturing costs. Recently, Sony significantly raised prices across all PS5 models due to these climate shifts. Consequently, industry analysts predict the standard home PS6 console could cost $1,000 or more.
A portable PS6 offers a potential compromise. It gives fans a more affordable entry point into the next hardware generation. However, buyers must still prepare their wallets. Given the bleeding-edge hardware and predicted insider specs, this handheld console will definitely carry a substantial premium price tag at launch.
