The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a 22-year-old final-year student of Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Lahore, and sought a detailed report from the institution to determine circumstances surrounding the incident and assess student safety and mental health support measures.
In an official statement issued in Islamabad on February 19, 2026, the council extended condolences to the bereaved family and asked the college to provide a factual account within seven days.
The requested information includes the date and circumstances of the incident, details of any inquiry or fact-finding committee, preliminary findings or expected timeline of the investigation, and steps taken to improve hostel safety and student support systems.
PM&DC said medical and dental students represent a vital part of Pakistan’s future healthcare workforce and incidents of this nature are deeply alarming. The council stressed the need for stronger institutional mechanisms to safeguard students’ physical and mental wellbeing.
The regulatory body advised all medical and dental colleges across the country to appoint qualified counsellors and psychologists and establish confidential counselling services for students in distress. Institutions were also urged to monitor student wellbeing closely, particularly signs of stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout.
PM&DC emphasized that proactive mental health support and timely counselling can help prevent tragedies and protect students’ lives and future.
The council said it will continue engagement with relevant institutions to ensure effective student protection measures and prevent recurrence of similar incidents in medical and dental colleges.
