PPL-Led Joint Venture Announces Gas Discovery in Sindh
Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) and its joint venture partners have announced a new gas discovery in the Sawan Field, Khairpur, Sindh. The discovery highlights the country’s growing hydrocarbon potential and innovative exploration techniques.
The Sawan Joint Venture includes UEP Beta (25%), PPL (30%), PPL Europe E&P Limited (10%), Prime AEP Limited (30%), and Government Holdings (Private) Limited (5%). Exploration in the Sawan area has been ongoing to assess the Lower Goru Formation’s hydrocarbon potential.
The exploratory well Sawan North Deep-1 ST-1 (SND-1 ST-1), drilled to 14,017 feet, yielded gas at 0.30 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) with a flowing wellhead pressure of 100 psig. This is the first well in the area drilled using an exclusive sequence stratigraphic trap evaluation approach, validating the method and opening new exploration opportunities.
PPL stated,
“This development marks a significant milestone for the joint venture and Pakistan’s energy sector, paving the way for further hydrocarbon discoveries in the Sawan region.”
The discovery reinforces Pakistan’s strategic focus on increasing domestic gas production and energy security, encouraging investment in innovative geological techniques.
