PTA Initiates VPN Licensing in Pakistan to Regulate Online Privacy Tools

ISLAMABAD: In a significant move to formalize the use of online privacy tools, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has initiated VPN licensing in Pakistan under its Class License regime, targeting the country’s 242 million citizens amid growing digital restrictions.
As the regulatory grip tightens on unlicensed VPN usage following the nationwide ban on X and other platforms, PTA has officially begun issuing Class Licenses to Virtual Private Network (VPN) service providers. So far, three companies have been granted licenses, allowing them to legally operate under the country’s telecommunication regulations.
The PTA emphasized the importance of compliance, urging all VPN service providers currently functioning without authorization to apply for the appropriate Class License immediately. This initiative aims to bring all entities offering VPN services under the legal and regulatory framework, preventing interruptions in service and ensuring alignment with national laws.
“Timely licensing is crucial to avoid potential disruptions and ensure users maintain uninterrupted access to VPN services,” PTA stated in its official message.
Detailed guidelines on VPN licensing in Pakistan, including eligibility criteria, procedural steps, and application forms, have been made available on PTA’s official website. Interested companies are encouraged to start the registration process at the earliest.
