The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Thursday formally issued 5G licences to leading telecom operators, marking a decisive step toward the commercial launch of next-generation mobile services in the country.
The development follows the successful conclusion of the recent spectrum auction, with major players including Jazz, Zong, and Ufone securing spectrum in key frequency bands.
Officials said the issuance of licences enables operators to move swiftly from testing to full-scale commercial deployment, unlocking ultra-fast internet speeds, low latency, and enhanced connectivity for consumers and businesses alike.
The regulator emphasised that operators are required to meet rollout obligations, ensure quality of service, and expand coverage beyond major urban centres to drive digital inclusion.
Industry experts view the move as a watershed moment for Pakistan’s digital economy, with 5G expected to catalyse growth in sectors such as e-commerce, fintech, health tech, and smart infrastructure.
