PTA Plans New System to Keep Closer Watch on Internet Networks

Published by

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is planning to introduce a new system to monitor internet and telecom networks across the country, a move officials say will help improve service quality, security, and overall oversight of digital infrastructure.

Under the proposal, the authority will develop a National Telecom Monitoring Solution that includes a structured framework for setting up Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) across Pakistan. These exchange points allow local internet traffic to be routed within the country instead of relying heavily on international networks.

Officials familiar with the plan said the new system will give regulators real-time visibility into network performance, traffic flow, and possible security threats. This would help authorities respond more quickly to service disruptions, technical failures, or cyber incidents.

Internet Exchange Points play a key role in modern digital networks by keeping local data local. By routing traffic domestically, IXPs can reduce delays, lower costs for service providers, and improve user experience. Pakistan currently depends significantly on international routing, even for local data exchange, which can affect speed and reliability.

The proposed framework will also introduce technical and regulatory guidelines for telecom operators, internet service providers, and other stakeholders. These standards are meant to ensure uniform implementation and smoother coordination across the sector.
