Punjab is moving closer to clean and modern urban transport as authorities approve the launch of 114 electric buses in Multan Division, aiming to provide safer, affordable, and environment-friendly travel across major districts. The project will also include the construction of 470 modern bus shelters, marking a major upgrade to the region’s public transport system.
According to officials, the electric bus service will be rolled out in phases, starting with 45 buses on three routes in Multan city. In the second phase, 24 additional buses will be added across five new routes, expanding coverage for daily commuters. The government has already completed tendering for 49 bus shelters in Multan City and 87 in Multan Saddar, signaling fast progress on ground preparations.
The project extends beyond Multan city to other districts of the division. Authorities plan to deploy 15 electric buses in Khanewal with 136 shelters, 10 buses in Vehari supported by 64 shelters, and 15 buses in Lodhran with 134 shelters, where the tendering process is currently underway. This regional approach aims to improve connectivity and reduce reliance on fuel-based transport.
Multan Division Commissioner Aamir Kareem Khan directed relevant departments to maintain transparency, quality standards, and timely completion of bus shelters before the service launch. Officials believe the electric bus initiative will help reduce air pollution, cut fuel costs, and support Punjab’s broader green transport vision while improving daily commuting for thousands of residents.
