The Punjab government has approved the issuance of special driving licenses to 16-year-olds, allowing them to legally ride motorcycles across the province under specific conditions.
The decision was approved by the Punjab Cabinet and is expected to come into effect after the issuance of an official gazette notification. Following the cabinet’s approval, the Home Department has forwarded recommendations to the Law Department, which is expected to issue the notification shortly.
Under the new policy, license holders aged 16 will be permitted to operate motorcycles and carry one passenger. However, they will not be allowed to drive commercial vehicles, including motorcycle rickshaws, Qingqi rickshaws, or any other public transport vehicles.
Officials clarified that applicants will still be required to fulfill all legal requirements, including passing the prescribed driving tests and meeting eligibility criteria before receiving a license.
The move is aimed at providing a legal framework for young motorcycle riders while promoting road safety and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations.
Authorities believe the policy will help regulate underage motorcycle use by bringing eligible riders into the formal licensing system and encouraging responsible driving practices.
