Punjab EPA Cracks Down on Smoke-Emitting Vehicles in Anti-Smog Campaign

Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched a strict crackdown on smoke emitting heavy vehicles, targeting old and unfit buses used by schools, hospitals, and other institutions. This move is part of the province’s intensified anti smog campaign to improve air quality and public health.

Air pollution remains a major concern in Punjab, especially during the winter months when smog levels rise sharply. The EPA has stepped up enforcement to reduce vehicular emissions, focusing on heavy duty vehicles that contribute significantly to air pollution.

Officials confirmed that fines will be issued immediately to any heavy vehicle emitting excessive smoke. Vehicles may also be impounded on the spot to prevent repeated violations.

Director General Environment Punjab, Imran Hameed Sheikh, has instructed all educational institutions, hospitals, and private operators to inspect and repair or replace faulty buses immediately. He emphasized that institutions are responsible for ensuring their fleets meet both environmental and safety standards.

A spokesperson from the EPA stated:

“Our goal is to protect public health by ensuring that vehicles on the roads comply with emissions standards. No old or unfit vehicle will be allowed to operate unchecked.”
