The Punjab Provincial Transport Authority has clarified that newer cars are exempt from the fitness certificate requirement for a specific period based on their engine capacity and date of manufacture.
Under the latest notification, cars with engines up to 1,000cc will require a fitness certificate after five years from the date of manufacture. Vehicles with engines between 1,001cc and 2,000cc will need certification after six years, while cars with engines above 2,000cc will require a fitness certificate after seven years.
The fitness certificate will remain valid for one year. This means owners of cars that have not yet reached the applicable age limit do not need to obtain certification.
The clarification comes as Punjab prepares to enforce vehicle fitness certification requirements. The authority had earlier announced a 30-day period for vehicle owners to obtain valid certificates, with legal action scheduled to begin from October 15 against vehicles operating without the required certification.
Owners of vehicles that have reached the applicable age threshold can visit their nearest Provincial Vehicle Inspection and Certification System (PVICS) Centre to obtain the required fitness certificate.
