The Zakat Department has approved the launch of a Widow Support Card, a new welfare initiative aimed at providing financial relief to widows across Punjab. The program, expected to roll out later this month, will offer direct cash assistance funded through Zakat collections.
According to officials, each eligible widow will receive Rs100,000 through the Widow Support Card. Additional financial assistance will be provided based on the number of dependent children.
Widows with one child will receive an extra Rs25,000, while those with two children will be granted an additional Rs50,000, helping families cope with rising living costs.
“This initiative is designed to ease financial pressure on widows and support their children’s basic needs,” an official from the Zakat Department said.
The Widow Support Card is part of the Punjab government’s broader social protection measures, aimed at supporting vulnerable segments of society. With inflation and economic pressures affecting low-income households, the government has increased its reliance on Zakat-funded welfare programs to deliver targeted assistance.
The Zakat Department has approved Rs4 billion for the scheme. Officials say the funds will help improve economic stability for widows, ensure household support, and reduce dependency on informal aid channels.
