Punjab Govt, British Council Join Hands to Improve Spoken English in Schools

The Punjab Government and the British Council have partnered to enhance spoken English skills among students in government primary schools, aiming to boost communication confidence and teaching quality across the province. The agreement was formalized through a Letter of Intent (LOI) signed between the School Education Department (SED) and the British Council.

Under the initiative, 1,920 teachers across 480 schools will be trained to improve classroom communication, benefiting nearly 80,000 students. Additionally, 160 District Subject Experts (DSEs) from 40 districts will serve as mentors to promote continuous professional growth among teachers.

“The heart of every classroom is its teacher,” said Ben Lawton, Deputy Director of the British Council Pakistan. “This partnership empowers teachers to build confidence in students and open doors through the power of English.”

Khalid Nazir Wattoo, Secretary of SED Punjab, emphasized that strengthening English skills will help students learn in an inclusive environment and prepare them for a brighter future. The British Council will also support the creation of five teacher resource books and a head teacher guide, designed specifically for local classroom needs.

This collaboration continues the British Council’s long-term commitment to education reform and professional development in Pakistan, reinforcing Punjab’s efforts to improve public-school education standards.
