Punjab Imposes Heavy Fines for 8 Major Traffic Violations
The Punjab government has revised the Motor Vehicle Act, introducing steep fines for eight major traffic violations to strengthen road safety and ensure responsible driving across the province. The new rules target offenses including air pollution, illegal parking, underage driving, mobile phone use while driving, and overloading on motorcycles.
Drivers causing air pollution can face fines ranging from Rs. 5,000 for motorcycles to Rs. 20,000 for heavy transport vehicles (HTVs). Underage driving carries the highest penalties, reaching up to Rs. 100,000 for HTVs. Other violations, such as parking in no-parking zones, not wearing seatbelts, carrying excess passengers, and obstructing roads, also attract substantial fines.
Officials stated,
“These measures aim to promote responsible driving, reduce traffic accidents, and improve overall road discipline in Punjab.”
The government emphasized strict enforcement and awareness campaigns to ensure compliance with the updated regulations.
