The Punjab government has launched a Dubai-style traffic monitoring and license points system aimed at ensuring road safety and accountability among motorists across the province. The initiative was approved during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, as part of broader efforts to modernize traffic management.
Under the new system, each traffic violation will result in a deduction of 2 to 4 points from a driver’s license. If a motorist accumulates 20 points within a year, their license will be suspended for a period ranging from two months to one year, depending on the severity of the offenses.
Explaining the policy, a senior traffic official said,
“The points-based framework is designed to curb habitual violations by introducing accountability beyond monetary fines. Offenders will now face both financial and driving consequences.”
The system mirrors successful traffic control models used in cities like Dubai, integrating stricter monitoring mechanisms to promote discipline and safety. Violations such as overspeeding and signal breaking will carry the highest penalties, each resulting in a four-point deduction in addition to fines.
Officials believe the new digital monitoring and penalty system will reduce road accidents, encourage safe driving habits, and enhance compliance with traffic laws. The initiative also aligns with Punjab’s broader transport reform agenda to create smarter and safer cities.
