Punjab Police has requested approval to purchase 11 luxury bullet-proof vehicles for Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) judges, citing growing security threats against the judiciary. The proposal, submitted by IGP Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar to the Chief Minister, estimates the total cost at Rs. 238.645 million, combining the price of Haval H6 PHEV vehicles and bullet-proof modifications. Authorities stress that this move is crucial to ensure the safe movement of judges and protect the judiciary from potential attacks.
The security of judicial officers, particularly ATC judges, has become a high priority in Pakistan due to increasing threats against the judiciary and ongoing cases involving terrorism and high-profile crimes. The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Security Division, Lahore, oversees the protection of ATC judges, foreign dignitaries, and important government buildings. He emphasized that the new vehicles are “urgently needed to strengthen security and maintain confidence in the justice system.”
The police have proposed acquiring the vehicles through a supplementary grant in the current fiscal year 2025-26. Each Haval H6 PHEV costs around Rs. 12.895 million, while bullet-proof modifications add Rs. 8.8 million per vehicle.
“The safety of our judiciary is non-negotiable. These vehicles will ensure that ATC judges can perform their duties without fear,” said the DIG Security Division, highlighting the urgency of the procurement.
Security analysts note that high-profile cases often put judicial officers at risk, making enhanced transportation a key component of protective measures. This step aligns with international practices where judges and prosecutors in sensitive cases are provided secure mobility.
This request comes amid heightened security concerns across Punjab, including threats to government officials and critical infrastructure. By securing these vehicles, Punjab Police aims to create a safer environment for the judiciary while ensuring that the rule of law continues uninterrupted.
