In a major enforcement push under Punjab’s new traffic reforms, police seized more than 12,800 vehicles and arrested over 3,100 people in just one day, marking one of the province’s strictest road safety crackdowns. The drive reflects the chief minister’s directive for a modern, disciplined traffic system, supported by heavy fines and on ground monitoring.
Punjab has recently strengthened its traffic rules after increasing public complaints about reckless driving, unlicensed riders, and smoke emitting vehicles. The new system focuses on safety, digital challans, and strict action against repeat offenders.
During the 24 hour operation, police impounded thousands of vehicles mostly motorcycles and rickshaws for repeated violations. A spokesperson said,
“This crackdown is meant to save lives and bring long term discipline on the roads.”
The force issued 50,480 challans worth over Rs63 million, fined 3,511 smoke emitting vehicles, and impounded 384 of them. Authorities also seized fitness certificates of three vehicles to curb environmental hazards.
To regularise driving activity, 42,561 licences were issued in a single day. Over the past week, police issued more than 257,000 challans, collecting Rs203 million in fines.
Despite strict measures, road accidents remained alarming. In the last 24 hours alone, 16 people lost their lives and 1,652 were injured in over 1,438 crashes across Punjab. Rescue teams shifted 677 serious cases to hospitals, while minor injuries were treated on the spot.
