The Excise and Taxation Department collected Rs4 billion in token tax from vehicle owners across Punjab during July, marking the highest one-month recovery of its kind on record.
According to excise and Taxation Department officials, of the 1.9 million vehicles registered as token-tax eligible in the province, only 495,000 owners paid their dues during the month.
The provincial capital Lahore alone accounted for over Rs2.25 billion of the total amount collected, more than half the provincial figure.
Officials said this is the first time such a large volume of token tax has been recovered within a single month. The provincial government has set an annual target of Rs73 billion in motor tax collections for the current fiscal year.
On the directives of the Director General Excise, checkpoints were established across the province from the start of the fiscal year to enforce recovery. Teams stationed at these checkpoints are collecting outstanding dues directly from token tax defaulters.
The department is also offering a 10 percent rebate on token tax payments made during the first two months of the fiscal year. Officials urged vehicle owners to clear their dues within this window to benefit from the discount before it expires.
