The Punjab government has decided to expand its surveillance infrastructure by installing CCTV cameras at the grassroots level, aiming to strengthen security and improve monitoring across the province.
According to sources, authorities have finalized a comprehensive plan to deploy Safe City cameras in all union councils, enabling close monitoring of streets and residential neighborhoods. The project is expected to cover nearly 7,000 union councils across Punjab, with an estimated cost of Rs5 billion.
Officials confirmed that working papers for the initiative have been completed, and a summary has been sent to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for approval. The proposal has also been forwarded by the chief secretary for final consideration.
Under the plan, an effective surveillance system will be established at the union council level to ensure that every locality is monitored through modern technology. The initiative is part of efforts to extend the Safe City project to lower administrative tiers.
Authorities believe the expansion will significantly enhance law enforcement capabilities, improve crime detection, and help ensure public safety across Punjab.
