The Punjab Assembly has introduced a new bill to regulate private academies, coaching centers, and tuition institutes across the province, marking an important step to bring transparency and accountability in the education sector.
The Punjab Private Educational Institutions Promotion and Regulation (Amendment) Bill was presented by PML-N legislator Amjad Ali Javed. Over the past decade, the number of academies and coaching centers has grown rapidly, offering exam preparation and extra classes to thousands of students. However, their unregulated operations have raised concerns regarding quality, fees, and student protection.
Lawmakers stressed that a proper legal framework would help standardize these institutions, improve oversight, and safeguard the interests of both students and parents. The bill has been sent to a committee, which will present its recommendations within two months before the matter is reviewed again in the assembly. The final approval will rest with Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider.
Education experts believe regulation could also improve teaching standards, curb exploitation, and ensure fair competition among institutions. This move is being seen as part of Punjab’s broader effort to reform its education system and strengthen governance in the private education sector.
