Punjab is taking a major step to promote its world-famous Himalayan pink salt by selling it as a branded product in international markets rather than as a raw commodity. This move aims to boost exports, create jobs, and enhance foreign exchange earnings. Recently, Pakistan’s pink salt received global recognition by winning a top innovation award in Belgium, highlighting its unique quality and international demand.
The Punjab government, through its Mines and Minerals Department, has prepared a strategic plan to increase pink salt production and encourage the business community. Under the CM Punjab Value Addition Finance for Pink Salt project, interest-free loans totaling PKR 5 billion will be provided to businesses involved in processing and branding pink salt.
A summary seeking approval from the Chief Minister emphasizes that pink salt, found only in Punjab, has high global demand. “Providing easy, interest-free loans will not only grow the pink salt industry but also create employment opportunities and strengthen Pakistan’s position in international markets,” the summary states.
Punjab’s pink salt reserves are primarily located in Mianwali, Khushab, Chakwal, and Jhelum districts. To support this initiative, the provincial cabinet has approved the creation of Special Mineral Processing Zones in Qaidabad. Additionally, the sale of pink salt in its raw form has been banned to ensure value addition and protect the brand’s global reputation.
Winning the Innovation Award in Belgium has added credibility to Pakistan’s Himalayan pink salt, giving it a competitive edge in the global market. Experts believe that with proper branding, packaging, and marketing, Pakistan can emerge as a leading exporter of premium pink salt worldwide.
