Punjab Warns 3-Year Jail, 50,000 Fine for Exam Paper Leaks on Social Media

Ahead of the annual board examinations, authorities in Punjab have warned that sharing question papers on social media will lead to serious punishment. Anyone found leaking exam papers could face up to three years in jail and a fine of Rs. 50,000. The warning applies to all platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and X.

Education boards across the province issued official notices this week, stating that sharing exam papers during or after exam hours will be treated as a criminal offence. Officials said the decision aims to ensure fairness and prevent cheating during examinations.

The notices said the offence falls under the Punjab University and Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education Malpractices Act, 1950. Under the law, leaking or circulating exam material for an upcoming or ongoing paper carries both jail time and a fine.

Authorities also announced a strict ban on mobile phone use inside examination centers. Taking photos, recording videos, or forwarding question papers is not allowed. Officials warned that even attempting to capture exam content using electronic devices will be treated as a serious violation.

To ensure enforcement, invigilators have been directed to remain alert during exams. District administrations and police have also been asked to assist in monitoring examination centers.
