Rawalpindi has officially launched its long-awaited e-challan system, marking a major shift toward automated traffic enforcement in another major Punjab city. The system has begun issuing digital fines through Safe City cameras as authorities push for stricter road safety compliance.
Rawalpindi’s Safe City SSP confirmed that the e-challan system went live on Friday, using high-resolution surveillance cameras to detect violations in real time. These include riding without helmets, driving without seat belts, illegal number plates, lane violations, and running red lights all processed through AI without the need for traffic police on the ground.
The e-challans will be automatically generated and delivered to the violators’ home addresses. Officials say this modern system will remove manual delays, ensure transparency, and significantly improve enforcement.
More than 2,000 cameras have been installed across 359 locations in the city, including 15 cameras at key entry and exit points. Authorities believe the system will help reduce accidents and bring discipline to Rawalpindi’s increasingly congested roads.
A Safe City official, referring to the system’s launch, said,
“Any driver passing a Safe City camera without meeting traffic rules will be fined instantly. The objective is safer roads, not revenue collection.”
The move comes as Punjab expands digital enforcement across major cities, following similar systems introduced in Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad and now Rawalpindi.
