The National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a cautionary advisory for the period from March to September 2026, warning of possible Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in northern Pakistan. Rising temperatures, unusual weather patterns, and early heatwave conditions are expected to accelerate glacier melting, increasing the risk of sudden floods in vulnerable areas.
According to NDMA, communities downstream of glacial lakes in Gilgit-Baltistan and Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are most at risk, could face potential flash floods.
The advisory urges provincial and local authorities to review contingency plans, ensure early warning systems are operational, and prepare evacuation arrangements if needed. NDMA also asks communities in high-risk areas to remain alert, avoid unnecessary movement near glacial streams, and follow instructions from local authorities.
Glacial Lake Outburst Floods occur when water from a glacier-fed lake suddenly bursts through its natural barriers, often causing destructive flash floods downstream. In the past, similar events in northern Pakistan have led to loss of life, damage to homes, roads, and farmland, highlighting the need for preparedness.
The public is encouraged to stay informed through official NDMA channels, local media, and the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” mobile app for timely updates. NDMA emphasizes that being proactive can significantly reduce the human and economic toll of these floods.
