The government has decided to complete Rawalpindi’s Rs. 14 billion Kutchery Chowk remodeling project ahead of schedule while also developing a Rs. 1.6 billion parking plaza at Jinnah Park to ease traffic congestion. Divisional Commissioner Amir Khattak said accelerated work is underway to provide relief to the public.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation, Commissioner Amir Khattak said the Kutchery Chowk project is a key part of the signal-free corridor connecting Ammar Chowk to Motorway Chowk. Senior officials, including Punjab Highway Department Superintendent Engineer Rao Tahir, were also present.
Officials said the government is investing Rs. 5.9 billion in the Kutchery Chowk underpass and flyover, Rs. 3.9 billion in the Jinnah Park and Annexe Chowk flyover and underpass, and Rs. 2.6 billion in the Iftikhar Janjua Chowk underpass, covering a total area of 31 kanals.
The commissioner said the project was originally planned with an 18-month completion timeline but authorities opted to fast-track construction to minimize disruption. He added that double shifts have been introduced to ensure the project is completed by May 31 without compromising construction quality.
To address roadside parking issues, a multi-storey parking plaza is being built at Jinnah Park. Proposals for five additional parking plazas, including in Saddar and Cantonment areas, have also been sent for approval, aimed at improving traffic flow across the city.
