The Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has officially set a deadline for its massive surveillance rollout. According to a new report submitted to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the authority will expand camera coverage to all districts in Punjab by December 31.
Officials confirmed that the installation of these modern monitoring and security systems is progressing at a rapid pace across the province.
The rollout is currently taking place in distinct phases. So far, the PSCA has successfully completed camera installation in 18 districts.
The financial breakdown for this infrastructure upgrade is significant. Phase 1 of the safe cities project cost Rs. 5.18 billion. Furthermore, the estimated cost for Phase 2 stands at Rs. 5.64 billion.
This development follows recent tech-driven initiatives in major cities. For example, Rawalpindi’s City Traffic Police recently launched an automated e-challan system using Safe City cameras.
Authorities have installed more than 2,000 cameras at 359 locations within Rawalpindi. Consequently, this network allows for continuous monitoring of traffic flow and stricter enforcement of rules.
The system now automatically issues electronic fines for several specific violations:
- Riding motorcycles without helmets.
- Failing to wear seat belts.
- Speeding.
- Overloading.
Ultimately, authorities believe expanding this network to all districts will strengthen law enforcement capabilities and improve overall safety across Punjab.
