The Senate Standing Committee on Problems of Less Developed Areas, chaired by Senator Niaz Ahmed, met at Old PIPS Hall, Parliament Lodges, to review progress on infrastructure, telecom, and energy projects in regions including Chitral and Shangla.
The Committee expressed concern over delays in development projects, particularly flood control measures and a 5MW hydropower project in Chitral under PSDP.
Senator Talha Mehmood highlighted poor internet connectivity in Upper Chitral, causing difficulties for students and IT professionals. The Chairman PTA and CEO USF assured immediate steps for improvement. The Committee also directed NAVTTC to submit audit and third-party verification reports.
The 48 km Khawazakhela-Besham Expressway project was discussed, with delays attributed to high costs and realignment. The Committee urged early commencement and faster completion.
PTA reported installation of 142 telecom towers in Chitral, but connectivity issues persist. PESCO briefed on ongoing electricity projects, while the Committee sought transparency regarding USF funds and bank details.
The Committee expressed strong dissatisfaction over the absence of several Federal Secretaries and directed mandatory attendance in the next meeting.
The meeting was attended by Senators Jan Muhammad, Syed Kazim Ali Shah, Muhammad Aslam Abro, Danesh Kumar, and Falak Naz, along with senior officials from relevant departments.
