Severe Cold and Snowfall Alert Issued Across Pakistan

Published by

Pakistan is facing an intense spell of winter as authorities issue a severe cold wave and heavy snowfall alert for multiple regions. The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) has warned that extreme cold, snowfall, and avalanche risks will persist until January 29, affecting daily life, travel, and safety across northern and upper parts of the country.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a strong western weather system is impacting upper and northern regions. Islamabad and most districts of Punjab are expected to remain cold and dry, accompanied by chilly winds. Sindh will stay dry, though cold coastal winds may intensify discomfort.

In Murree, snowfall has stopped, but freezing temperatures continue in Murree, Galiyat, and nearby areas. Azad Kashmir remains extremely cold, while Gilgit-Baltistan is expected to experience further snowfall with partly cloudy conditions.

NEOC has warned that heavy snowfall is likely over the next 24 to 48 hours in Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, and northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, increasing the risk of avalanches. Tragically, an avalanche in Lower Chitral claimed the lives of nine members of a single family, while one child was rescued alive.

In upper Azad Kashmir, including Neelum Valley, Bagh, and Sudhnoti, snowfall has damaged houses, disrupted electricity, and blocked roads. Several key routes in Kaghan Valley, Upper Dir, Kumrat, Lowari Tunnel, and Shangla Top have been closed, prompting authorities to restrict tourist entry for safety.

Meanwhile, snowfall and landslides have blocked the Karakoram Highway at multiple points, leaving hundreds of travelers stranded. Areas such as Astore have been completely cut off. In northern Balochistan, freezing temperatures have caused water pipelines to freeze, creating serious challenges for residents.

The NDMA and provincial disaster management authorities have directed rescue teams and relevant departments to remain on high alert. An official from NEOC stated,

“Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel to snowbound areas and strictly follow weather advisories to prevent loss of life.”

The public has been urged to stay informed through official alerts and use the NDMA Disaster Alert mobile application for real-time updates.
