SHC Notices Petition Against Karachi E-Challan System

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has issued notices on a petition challenging the recently implemented e-challan system in Karachi, which aims to curb traffic violations.

The petition, filed by the Markazi Muslim League, argues that Karachi’s infrastructure is in poor condition while citizens face disproportionately high fines. It also raises concerns over threats to block national identity cards for unpaid challans.

The court has directed all respondents including the Chief Secretary Sindh, IG Police, DIG Traffic, NADRA, and Excise Department to submit their replies by November 25. The bench also ordered that this petition be clubbed with other similar cases pending before the court.

“The disparity in fines between cities undermines the principle of equality. A traffic challan in Lahore costs Rs200, whereas in Karachi, fines reach Rs5,000. This is unjust,” the petition states.

The case highlights growing public concern over the fairness and implementation of e-challan systems, with legal experts noting that uniform traffic enforcement policies are crucial for citizens’ rights and compliance.
