The Sindh government has approved the People’s Green Transport Project, which includes the procurement of 500 new electric buses for Karachi and Hyderabad, marking a major step toward sustainable and eco-friendly urban mobility in the province.

The decision was finalized during the 48th meeting of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Policy Board, chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah at the CM House on Friday. Senior ministers, secretaries, and PPP officials attended the session.

“The project will transform Sindh’s transport system into a cleaner, smarter, and more efficient model,” said CM Murad Ali Shah, emphasizing the province’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

The project’s scope, structure, and risk-sharing model have been approved, alongside an amended proposal from a private firm granted the right of first refusal and exemption from prequalification. The board also authorized the solicitation of additional private investors to strengthen implementation.

Once operational, the buses will be integrated with the Green Line BRT network to ensure seamless connectivity across the city. This clean transport initiative aims to cut air pollution, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and enhance urban mobility for over 200,000 commuters daily.

The Sindh government termed the project a “major milestone in the province’s transition to sustainable public transport,” aligning with Pakistan’s broader climate and urban development goals.
