The Sindh government has temporarily taken its motorcycle fuel subsidy portal offline after multiple hacking attempts were detected shortly after its launch.
According to Sindh Excise Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla, the platform was shut down as a precautionary measure to protect user data and system integrity. The portal had gone live just a day earlier.
The online system was introduced to allow registered motorcyclists to apply for a monthly fuel subsidy of Rs. 2,000. Applicants were required to submit their CNIC and bank account details through the portal. However, users reported difficulties accessing the platform within hours of its launch, raising concerns about stability and security.
The disruption highlights ongoing challenges in launching large-scale digital public services, particularly those handling sensitive personal and financial information. In Pakistan, where online government platforms are increasingly being adopted, cybersecurity remains a critical concern.
For thousands of motorcyclists expecting financial relief amid rising fuel costs, the outage means delays in accessing the subsidy. Authorities have not yet announced a timeline for when the portal will be restored, but have indicated that it will only go live again once security issues are fully addressed.
Once operational, the portal is expected to serve as a centralized system for verifying applicants and distributing financial assistance directly to eligible motorcyclists. By linking CNIC and banking details, the system would streamline the subsidy process, reduce manual paperwork, and ensure that funds reach verified users on a monthly basis.
Edit: The portal is back online.
