The Sindh government has announced a one-day holiday for all public and private schools across the province on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, in observance of Shab-e-Barat, a night of religious significance for Muslims. The decision, issued by the School Education and Literacy Department, affects all institutions under the department’s administrative control, ensuring students and staff can participate in prayers and religious activities.
Shab-e-Barat, observed on the 15th of Shaban, is widely celebrated across Pakistan. The night is considered important for seeking forgiveness, offering prayers for deceased ancestors, and performing acts of worship. Schools in Sindh, both public and private, have been directed to strictly adhere to the government notification and inform all students, teachers, and staff regarding the holiday.
According to the notification issued on January 30, 2026, the School Education and Literacy Department has urged all relevant authorities to implement the holiday effectively. Authorities are also instructed to circulate the notice among educational institutions to ensure compliance. A spokesperson for the department stated,
“All schools operating under the administrative control of the department will remain closed on February 4 to allow students and staff to observe Shab-e-Barat. We request everyone to follow the instructions responsibly.”
This one-day closure aligns with religious practices observed throughout the province, where families participate in prayers, visit shrines, and light lamps in remembrance of deceased loved ones. Schools are expected to resume normal operations on Thursday, February 5, 2026.
