Social Media Policy Coming Soon In Balochistan

QUETTA: The government of Balochistan has announced its plan to introduce the province’s first-ever social media policy. This policy will regulate online content, promote ethical digital engagement, and empower the youth to represent Balochistan in a positive light.

Chief Minister of Balochistan Mir Sarfraz Bugti revealed the development during a meeting with social media influencers in Quetta. He stated that the policy has already been finalized and will be implemented soon.

The chief minister emphasized the growing influence of social media in the modern world, noting its dual potential. “In today’s world, the influence of social media cannot be ignored. It can either serve as a tool for progress or a weapon for misinformation,” he said.

According to government officials, the new policy aims to address both the positive and negative impacts of social media. On one hand, these platforms provide a space for accountability, constructive criticism, and civic engagement. On the other hand, they can also serve as vehicles for the spread of misinformation, hate speech, and divisive content.

Bugti acknowledged this balance, stating, “We will welcome positive criticism and use it to strengthen our reform process.” He also assured that “the concerns and suggestions of social media users will be incorporated into the upcoming policy,” signaling a participatory approach to digital governance.

The Balochistan chief minister encouraged influencers to use their platforms responsibly and urged young users to play an active role in building the province’s image. He stressed the importance of social harmony and unity in the digital age, saying, “Our goal is to block the way of negative propaganda and turn social media into a tool for improvement.

In his remarks, Mir Sarfraz Bugti reaffirmed the government’s broader commitment to youth development. He highlighted efforts in providing opportunities for employment, education, and awareness” and suggested that social media would be an essential tool to expand these efforts.

While details about the specific provisions of the policy are yet to be disclosed, officials suggest that it will align with the principles of free expression, accountability, and responsible digital citizenship.
