Solar Green Meter Installations Suspended as NEPRA Reviews New Rules

Published by

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced a public hearing on its Draft Consumer Regulations 2025, specifically targeting solar energy users. The hearing is scheduled for February 6, 2026, and stakeholders, including the general public, are encouraged to participate. A copy of the draft regulations is available on NEPRA’s official website.

This move comes as part of broader efforts to standardize electricity policies nationwide. Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) had recently suspended new installations of ‘Solar Green Meters’ following directives from the Ministry of Energy. The suspension, affecting both residential and industrial consumers, is expected to continue for one to two months until the Ministry approves the revised policy.

“New meters will be installed only after Ministry approval of the updated Solar Green Meters policy,” LESCO confirmed.

Similarly, other distribution companies across Pakistan have paused the supply of new solar connections, pending further instructions.

In addition to solar regulations, the federal government has decided to implement a uniform electricity tariff for all consumers nationwide. NEPRA has approved this petition, signaling a significant step toward a standardized power pricing system in Pakistan.

The public hearing will allow individuals, industry representatives, and institutions to provide feedback, ensuring that the final regulations reflect both government policy and consumer interests. This development is expected to shape Pakistan’s renewable energy sector and promote transparency in electricity consumption and billing.
