The anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) is unlike anything the gaming industry has seen before. Recently, rumours circulated that Rockstar’s next major title would operate like a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Naturally, this sparked confusion among Xbox Series X/S owners. However, trusted journalist and insider Jason Schreier has finally set the record straight.
In a new interview with the “Xbox Expansion Pass”, Schreier clarified his previous comments. He confirmed that Sony does not have a literal exclusivity deal with Rockstar Games. Instead, Sony is approaching the game’s launch with a specific business mindset.
According to Schreier, Sony views GTA VI as a massive “system seller”. Consequently, the company expects the bulk of console sales for the game to happen on PlayStation 5. Many players will likely buy a PS5 solely to play this title.
Because of this, Sony is clearing its release calendar. Schreier notes that Sony will not release major first-party titles, such as Marvel’s Wolverine, anywhere near GTA VI. He describes this launch window as a “blast zone”. Sony wants to avoid competing with what will be one of the biggest video games of all time. While the game will sell well on Xbox, Sony treats it as a soft exclusive for their own planning purposes.
Currently, Grand Theft Auto VI is set to release on November 19, 2026. However, the road to this date has been rocky. The game originally targeted a Fall 2025 window. Later, Rockstar pushed it to May 26, 2026. Unfortunately, disappointment struck again last year when the studio confirmed another six-month delay.
Worryingly, Schreier revealed earlier this month that the game is still not “content complete”. While Rockstar aims for the November deadline, the insider notes that it is too soon to rule out further delays.
Fans are eager for more. It has now been eight months since Rockstar released Trailer 2. Speculation suggests a third trailer could arrive as early as next month.
The community is specifically watching February 3, 2026. Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, will host its quarterly earnings call on that date. Historically, Rockstar often reveals new information just before these financial calls. Therefore, hopes are high for a fresh glimpse at the game soon.
