Pakistan Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) based weekly inflation rose by 0.15 percent in the second week of August 2026, pushing the year-on-year rate to 9.11 percent, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).
The bureau tracked prices of 51 essential items during the week. Of these, 20 items became more expensive, 9 registered a decline, and 22 remained unchanged.
Onions recorded the sharpest weekly increase, rising 24.68 percent. Gram pulse (chana dal) increased by 3.35 percent, while chicken prices went up by 2.45 percent. LPG prices rose by 0.67 percent. Tea, mustard oil, yogurt, and masoor dal were also among the items that became costlier during the week.
On a year-on-year basis, tomato prices posted an exceptional increase of 143.77 percent, followed by onions at 125.75 percent and wheat flour at 77.41 percent.
Petrol prices fell by 2.35 percent on a weekly basis, marking the largest decline recorded during the week. Tomato prices dropped by 1.26 percent, potatoes by 0.73 percent, and diesel by 0.29 percent. Bananas, moong dal, eggs, and sugar also became cheaper during the week.
Over the past year, LPG prices increased by 55.41 percent, diesel by 34.05 percent, and petrol by 23.02 percent. Bananas, chili powder, mutton, and beef also recorded double-digit annual price increases.
On an annual basis, potato prices fell by 30 percent, sugar declined by 17.93 percent, and chicken prices dropped by 17.45 percent. Gram dal, eggs, and moong dal also registered annual price declines.
