A new VR experience titled “Stranger Things: Catalyst” will bring the world of Stranger Things to life in an immersive, location-based virtual reality adventure through Sandbox VR’s global venues. The experience coincides with the debut of the show’s final season and was developed in collaboration with Netflix.
Players will step into familiar locations from the series, including Hawkins and the eerie depths of the Upside Down, to face off against monsters and supernatural threats. Using full-body motion tracking, haptic feedback, and cooperative gameplay, the experience enables fans to move, fight, and interact in real space.
Sandbox VR founder Steve Zhao described it as a way for fans to “physically step into the story they’ve watched unfold over the past seasons, creating thrilling memories with friends as they face the horrors of the Upside Down together.”
Stranger Things: Catalyst marks Sandbox VR’s third major collaboration with Netflix, following its adaptations of Squid Game Virtuals and Rebel Moon: The Descent. The release arrives ahead of the highly anticipated fifth and final season of Stranger Things, expected to premiere in late 2025.
Sandbox VR uses advanced motion tracking to capture each participant’s full body movements and combines this with a haptic suit to make every step, impact, and motion feel real. The experience is more physical than any at-home VR setup, offering complete immersion.
Unlike single-player VR titles, Stranger Things: Catalyst encourages cooperative play. Groups of friends can join forces to explore Hawkins together, combining teamwork with storytelling and action.
Stranger Things: Catalyst is set to open in late 2025 at Sandbox VR locations around the world. The company currently operates dozens of venues globally, from North America and Europe to Asia, and plans to expand further in the coming year. You can tag along with six of your friends to experience the Upside Down as it was meant to be.
For fans of the series, this experience bridges the gap between watching and living the story. Instead of sitting in front of a screen, players will wield virtual powers, fight side-by-side with friends, and uncover the mysteries of Hawkins first-hand.
The fifth and final season of “Stranger Things” will be released on Netflix in three parts: four episodes on November 26, three episodes on December 25, and the series finale on December 31.
