T20 World Cup Row: Sri Lanka Reminds Pakistan of 2009 Attack

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has urged Pakistan to rethink its decision to boycott the group stage match against India at the T20 World Cup 2026, saying it could damage the event and host preparations.

The two neighbouring countries are scheduled to meet in Colombo on 15 February, but the government of Pakistan has said the team will compete in the tournament while boycotting the match against India.

Sri Lanka Cricket, one of the co hosts of the tournament, has written formally to Pakistan, saying all arrangements for matches on the island have already been completed, including security plans and ticket sales.

Officials in Colombo have expressed concern that cancelling the highly anticipated fixture could lead to significant financial losses and disrupt the already announced schedule of tournament.

In the letter, Sri Lanka Cricket also reminded Pakistan of the support it extended during difficult periods, including touring Pakistan after the 2009 militant attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore.

“We recall that Sri Lanka Cricket and the national team toured Pakistan several times, playing international matches despite difficult conditions, including serious security incidents and heightened risks,” the letter said.

The cricket authority in Sri Lanka added that some Sri Lankan players were still physically and mentally affected by past attacks in Lahore, yet the board chose to honour its commitments to international cricket.

“Despite serious risks and emotional strain on players, Sri Lanka Cricket stood by Pakistan when many other teams were unwilling to tour,” the letter stated.

Sri Lanka Cricket said it hoped that the Pakistan Cricket Board and the government would reconsider their position on the match scheduled for 15 February in the broader interest of the game and regional cooperation.

It is worth mentioning that the Green Shirts will open their campaign against the Netherlands at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on 7 February, while their next game is scheduled for 10 February against the United States.
