Punjab Hikes Traffic Fines 10x To Curb Violations

In a major step to enhance transparency and accountability, traffic authorities have decided to equip wardens with 8,000 modern body cameras. This move will ensure that all traffic challans are issued with video evidence, improving trust between the public and law enforcement.

According to a senior traffic police official, every challan issued will be accompanied by a QR code linked video sent directly to the citizen’s mobile phone. The body cameras, featuring night vision and audio recording, will monitor both traffic violations and the conduct of traffic wardens, ensuring accountability on both sides.

Currently, 3,000 body cameras have already been procured, and the remaining units are expected to be purchased within the current financial year. All cameras will be connected to district control rooms and a central control room for real time monitoring and secure data storage.

The DIG Traffic emphasized that this initiative is expected to significantly strengthen law enforcement, reduce disputes, and enhance public confidence in traffic management. Officials believe video backed challans will make the system fairer, more transparent, and technologically advanced.

The move comes as part of ongoing reforms to improve governance and curb corruption in traffic enforcement, addressing complaints from citizens about misuse of authority and lack of accountability in issuing challans.
