Transport Shutdown Enters Sixth Day, Business Losses Mount
Export delays and supply chain disruptions intensified on Friday as the nationwide wheel jam strike by goods transporters entered its sixth day, with major transport bodies vowing to continue protests until their demands are accepted. The ongoing shutdown has affected ports, factories, and wholesale markets across Pakistan.
The strike began in response to amended motor vehicle regulations, which transporters say allow excessive fines, vehicle seizures, and FIR registrations. While some groups briefly engaged in talks with authorities, nationwide transport associations maintain that core issues remain unresolved.
The Pakistan Textile Exporters Association warned that imported consignments remain stuck at Karachi Port, while export shipments have been stranded at factories for nearly a week.
“Missed vessels and financial losses are damaging exporters’ credibility with international buyers,” said Secretary General Azizullah Goheer, stressing that delays could have long-term consequences.
Traders and transporters jointly criticised provincial authorities, saying repeated inspections by multiple departments have strained businesses and slowed commercial activity across Punjab and other provinces.
Although the Mazda Goods Transport Association and Punjab Goods Transport Alliance announced an end to their strike after assurances from Lahore police, national bodies rejected the move. All Pakistan Truck Trailer Owners Association chief Lala Yasir Naseer said the protest would continue nationwide, noting that only two groups had stepped back while broader demands remain unmet.
Transporters of Goods Association Chairman Tariq Gujjar added that goods movement has halted across the country, with operations at all three Karachi ports affected. He claimed trucks and trailers were being impounded in Punjab, with similar actions under way in Sindh.
Transport bodies insist the strike will continue until disputed provisions of the motor vehicle rules are suspended and enforcement eased.
