ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has approved the construction of new international airports in Sukkur and Muzaffarabad to boost connectivity and meet overseas demands.
The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has initiated groundwork for both projects, which are set to be completed over the next five years. A specialized committee has been tasked with overseeing land acquisition, while the Works and Development Department has already commenced initial project activities.
These airports, projected to cost billions of rupees, are expected to become vital nodes in Pakistan’s expanding air travel network. Sukkur International Airport will cater to the growing transit needs of upper Sindh, while Muzaffarabad International Airport in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) is poised to significantly improve accessibility to the region.
Responding to Public and Political Advocacy
The Muzaffarabad airport project, in particular, reflects a long-standing aspiration of overseas Pakistanis, especially those with Kashmiri heritage.
“The airport in Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), has been a long-standing demand of overseas Pakistanis, especially those of Kashmiri origin.”
Advocacy from British parliamentarians of Kashmiri descent added further momentum, with direct appeals made to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
In response, the federal government not only reaffirmed its commitment but also initiated a feasibility study for another airport in Mirpur. These moves align with a broader policy shift aimed at improving services for expatriates, which includes relaxed employment age limits and reserved educational quotas for their children.
Expert Engagement and Economic Promise
As part of its development strategy, the PAA is now in the process of hiring consultants.

The aim is to ensure that international standards are maintained throughout the planning and construction phases.
Once operational, both airports are expected to provide a boost to local economies, create jobs, and strengthen Pakistan’s transportation infrastructure. Officials say the initiative is more than a logistical upgrade. It’s a commitment to inclusive growth and diaspora engagement.
