UET Goes Plastic-Free with New Campus-Wide Policy
The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) has imposed a complete ban on plastic and hazardous disposable items across all its campuses, marking a strong push toward environmental sustainability and institutional reform. The decision introduces a zero-tolerance policy to eliminate single-use plastic from university premises.
The move aligns with broader government and institutional efforts to reduce plastic pollution and promote eco-friendly practices in public institutions. Universities have increasingly been asked to lead by example as Pakistan faces growing environmental and waste-management challenges.
Under the policy, plastic bags thinner than 75 microns, styrofoam plates, food boxes, cups, plastic glasses, and other low-quality disposable items are strictly prohibited. All cafeterias, canteens, juice corners, general stores, and shops operating inside UET have been directed to immediately stop using and selling these items.
Addressing the issue, Maryam Aurangzeb stated that “strict action will be taken against violators,” warning that heavy fines and severe penalties will be imposed for non-compliance.
University officials say the ban will be actively monitored to ensure full enforcement. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce plastic waste on campuses and encourage the use of sustainable alternatives, setting a model for other educational institutions.
