WhatsApp has started rolling out a new security feature that allows users to protect their chat backups using passkeys. The update replaces traditional passwords and 64-digit encryption keys with biometric authentication methods such as fingerprints, face recognition, or a screen lock code.
According to WhatsApp, the new system ensures that the same layer of security protecting personal chats and calls now extends to chat backups as well. The company says that with just a single tap or glance, users can keep their backups safe, private, and easy to access.
The feature will become available gradually over the next few weeks and months. Once rolled out, users can enable it by going to Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup and selecting the passkey option.
This update reflects WhatsApp’s ongoing push toward stronger privacy tools, offering users a simpler and more secure way to protect their data without relying on complex passwords.
